It exists because of a joke. In 2006 the director shot a fake trailer to sit between the two halves of a double-feature he was making with Quentin Tarantino, and then announced at South by Southwest that he was expanding the gag into an actual film. He'd had the idea since 1993, written while casting its star in a small part in Desperado, and had been quietly raiding the unmade script for sequences in his other films for years.
