A short, potent cocktail. Sugar and aromatic bitters are stirred together, rye whiskey and maraschino liqueur go in, then a small piece of pineapple; the lot is shaken with crushed ice, strained into a stemmed glass and topped with champagne, finished with a twist of lemon peel. Cognac sometimes stands in for the rye, Benedictine for the maraschino, orange for the pineapple. It is credited to a crown prince who later took the throne as king.
